Heritage, Progress, Pride -These are the values of Burwood Council; a proud and friendly community that celebrates its cultural diversity.
BrandCulture were commissioned to deliver a smart, simple and effective wayfinding and environmental graphics system to complement the library’s role in providing and preserving the cultural history and heritage associated with Burwood.
Gum tree leaves from the local trees were photographed and crafted into a glass graphic the entire height of the Library entrance. In consultation with the local community a need was identified to bring natural elements inside to promote a harmonious space that aids creativity and learning.
The branding resolved as two stacked books to create the letter ‘B’ in Burwood. This identity of the community hub was designed to give the library an immediate presence both during the day and at night.
Stacked colored timber wayfinding directories identify key destinations, color blocks on bookshelves help you find what you are searching for. These Wayfinding markers also create an opportunity for the librarians to rekindle interest in forgotten literary treasures by presenting books and other artefacts to people passing by.
The Kids quarters is made up of two beautifully crafted timber plywood features. A reading tree was created to hide a column and was constructed from layered plywood; color and light through organic shapes creates an inviting space for kids to sit under and let their imaginations run free. Behind the reading tree is a playful timber wall made up of multiple shapes that form a child-like forest consisting of clouds birds and butterflies, these graphics continue across the glazing creating visual continuity whilst complementing the reading tree in the middle.
Upon walking upstairs to the auditorium, where each room is named after a significant past Mayor, a graphic story of Burwood wraps around the void in the stairwell. This is broken in two parts by the bay window that outlooks the present day Burwood.
