Pioneering iBeacon technology to connect art with passers-by.

City of Sydney

Hyde Park, Sydney
Challenge
When the City of Sydney unveiled an art installation in Hyde Park called Yininmadyemi (Thou didst let fall), it was the perfect opportunity to trial iBeacon technology and enrich the user experience of its Culture Walks app. The trial gave visitors to Hyde Park the opportunity to learn about one of Sydney’s most distinctive public artworks, created by artist Tony Albert.
Solution
We concealed small ‘beacons’ in plaques and on selected park signs. These beacons trigger push notifications sent to the mobile screens of passers-by, linking them to the artist’s information page and an audio narration describing his work. Pavement markers promote the technology and encourage downloads of the Culture Walks app.

The City Art Program is a brilliant initiative to add joy and texture to the public domain through art installations.
