Brief
Westmead Hospital’s seven-storey car park is part of the much bigger $1 billion Westmead Redevelopment. With HDR as Principal Architects, it is the biggest health infrastructure project currently underway in NSW. Over 12,000 people arrive at Westmead Hospital every day, so the car park needed a trusted wayfinding system that would help alleviate the stress of visiting loved ones in hospital.
Solution
Our wayfinding solution is colourful, balanced and designed-to-be-noticed. Monochromatic shades of yellow distinguish the Darcy Road car park from other car parks at Westmead Hospital. Our colour strategy is designed to inform future planning for all car parks within the Westmead precinct, where each car park will be assigned its own hue.
The colour palette and wall graphics also form a natural connection with the architectural landscapes, highlighting main entries and arrival points. Solid coloured painted walls feature high contrasting message identification and iconography, with the primary goal of minimising the unnecessary stress that arises from disorientation.
