BrandCulture recently created a series of environmental graphics at Sydney Water’s North Head treatment plant in Manly, that pay homage to the tireless efforts of those who have contributed to Sydney Water’s legacy. Rare and classic images proudly display workers creating an intricate series of underground access tunnels, 500km in length that are an essential part of the Sydney Water operation and lead back to the North Head location.
Sydney Water engaged BrandCulture to create a more immersive experience for staff and visitors at their North Head Plant, Manly. They requested a series of environmental graphics in key locations. Sydney Water needed these graphics to celebrate the history of the plant and help form an inspirational story using carefully chosen images from the extensive Sydney Water Multimedia Database.
The imagery within the main working spaces reflected life underground for those who helped build the monstrous concrete tunnels, each individual image had to be consistently colour balanced and screened using the same halftone ratio. The main boardroom wall contained various service switches and a large fire exit door, this meant our image selection not only had to suit to fit the obstacles but careful retouching was required to create an effective and powerful image.
The seclusion graphics on all glazing surfaces is a sustainable polyester based material that is optically clear and has a ‘hard’ surface. The ‘Sydney Water’ blue was printed/backed on using Ultra Violet (UV) heat lamps. This process of transferring images to film does not use solvents and the biodegradable polyester film is more environmentally friendly over using PVC-based vinyls. Using a lightweight 100% recyclable aluminium frame that can be constantly re-skinned with graphics both efficiently and effortlessly, allows Sydney Water to tell multiple stories that keep their environment fresh and relevant without excess waste. The printed fabric skins, printed with sustainable solutions are also biodegradable. We track sustainability three ways: working efficiently whilst being conscious of our carbon footprint at every opportunity, specifying sustainable materials in addition to maintaining ethical work practices in the production of our projects and, finally, creating designs that can last for years; ideally the duration of the interior fit out.
