…easy as 1 2 3

Can a solid sculpture change shape? Well, this one, entitled Threshold by British artist James Hopkins for the Florentinium commercial offices development in Prague, effectively does! As you move around, it will appear to morph from 1, to 2, to 3. Or could it be a countdown? Either way, it is a fun, captivating visual trick that is oddly under utilised in the built environment. Where else would you like to see something like this, and what would you display instead of “1, 2, 3”? Can you imagine as a sundial what kind of shadows it can cast? Geometrically, a boolean combination of three simple extrusions’ intersections. Getting the shape accurately from a 3d CAD drawing into the physical world would have been made much easier with the advent of larger scale 3d printing.
